I am a graduate of the Sauder School of Business at UBC. Upon entering this program, I had no clue what I wanted to do beyond completing it with flying colours. Four and a half years, one marketing specialization, one student exchange to Mexico, and three co-op terms later, I have come no closer to figuring it all out. Although I am a realist in knowing that business and money make the world go round, I am an equal idealist in loathing everything about that notion. So it is at this crossroad of life known as post-secondary graduation where I stand uncertainly poised to fight the banal and predictable life-path of a commerce graduate.

The Not so Great Ocean Road

So although Melbourne was an amazing time, we figured it was necessary (after multiple people had gone on about it) to check out the Great Ocean Road for ourselves. The tour bus picked Jordan and myself up early in the morning and proceeded to carry 12 sleeping (none to comfortably) tourists a few hours outside the city. First stop: Bells Beach. We were definitely impressed with the views and the weather had happily chosen to cooperate with us. One rainforest trek and a koala colony (our first true koala spotting!) later we were in Apollo Bay which is where we set up camp for the night. With not much to do along the strip (maybe 20 stores/restaurants total) we decided to beach it up and grab some food/wine picnic styles. After a bit of a bicker, we decided to call it a night and retired to a game of chess. Jordan unfortunately is not one for chess; a dislike that was confirmed 2 hours later when it all ended in a stalemate...a very LONG and DRAWN OUT stalemate. Oh well, what else are you going to do in Apollo Bay?..."watch TV!" says Jordan...could have been right.

Luckily despite a quick rain the next morning, it all cleared up in the afternoon when we caught the bus back towards the city. But our tour of the sights was far from done...unfortunately. To everyone who has done the trip and loved it, this is nothing against you. But oh my goodness...what a tourist gimmick! We went to see the 12 apostles which was in fact 14. They'd (whomever they are) changed the name of these rock formations about a decade ago from "The Sow and Piglets" to the 12 apostles because they figured more people would come to see them. Marketing: it's everywhere I go. Anyways then on to the London Bridge which actually collapsed 20 years ago...so you basically go to look at a tourist attraction that no longer exists! They obviously don't tell you that until you get there. Oh well, it was still beautiful but my suggestion is that the "Great Ocean Road" could just do with being the "Ocean Road".

As I wrote this post a decent sized lizard/gecko was running around at my feet. Upon alerting the owner he reassured me it was Pete, and that he lived out back so not to worry.
